It may seem obvious, but if you have been previously married you will need to show a final divorce decree or a death certification for a deceased spouse in order to obtain a marriage license. Similarly, Massachusetts law prohibits anyone from marrying a parent or stepparent, a parent's sibling, a grandparent or grandparent's spouse, a child, a grandchild or grandchild's spouse, a sibling or sibling's child, a spouse's parent, grandparent, child or grandchild -- even if the marriage that created the familial relationship has ended by death or divorce.
